Elegant Excerpts

The excerpt for the 196th issue was taken from the speeches of H.H.The Dalai Lama.  That is:

Education is exactly like key. With the help of that key, one must open the doors of every knowledge and with the help of one’s inner talents and skills, one must be able to see and utilize all the knowledge. It is not at all enough to read and understand only one’s book in syllabus. If anyone is always engrossed with one’s book alone then he’ll be lost when he comes out from that book. He will not be considered as real educated person. Education is very important and at the same time, it is equally important to know the proper technique to get good education.

Excerpts from the speeches of H.H.The 14th Dalai Lama

1)      Tibetans in Tibet are hopefully waiting for us. We the Tibetans in exile are also thinking to do as much as we can by seeing the courage and firm commitment of the Tibetans in Tibet.

2)      Teachers not only to impart various knowledge but also ought to give genuine love and care to the children. If the teacher gives education with taking good responsibility of their future career, then the children can retain the gained knowledge properly. Education must be imparted not only for the development of mind, but also for the proper development of heart and character.

3)      We are not saying that we’ll struggle for rights with the help of weapons, but we are saying that we’ll struggle with truth and non-violence through middle-way approach, especially the struggle should be accompanied with proper education. Otherwise, it is difficult for us to bring the truth in its right place even though we have truth.

4)      There are many well-informed and far-sighted people in urban areas. At the same time, the people also gradually become liar and greedy. The importance of education is same to the whole world, but it is not at all enough with the development in education alone. It is becoming clear these days that it is more dangerous if the education is not accompanied with the good heart and good manner. We must be careful with regard to the growth of children on all round-development. They should be given good education along with good value education, so that they become learned, good human being and well-mannered citizen of the world.

5)      I am not saying that you must become monk or nun compulsorily. It depends upon yourself whether you’ll become monk or nun. But to become a good human being is the basic need to have a happy life

6)      These days in Tibet, Chinese are not only contempting and disrespecting Tibetan religion and culture, but also they are prepared to demolish the unique Tibetan religion and culture completely from its root, because they are afraid that Tibet is liable to separate from China’s mainland if its religion and culture survive in this world. Therefore, it is utmost important and essential for all the Tibetan students in exile to obtain best knowledge about Tibetan language and culture.

7)      When the meeting is held without cautiousness, don’t ever criticize directly to the person involved.  It is a sign of backwardness if the criticism is made with the feeling of enmity to the opponent. If we express the advantages and disadvantages of something, it should be expressed with sincerity and loyalty.  It is extremely important to correct the crooked one with sincere and genuine thought.

8)      From one point of view, we are showered with several privileges to rejoice and feel proud, but at present, we are on way to accumulate more and more substances or matters for fruitful results in future and it is not the appropriate time to celebrate the result.

9)      When we return back home, we can’t think that we can enter the same home there in Tibet and we can stay there comfortably. There is dramatic change happened in Tibet. Therefore, when we reached there, we need to build new houses and with the help of our education and skills, we need to think about our future. Everyone ought to think and plan that one can serve the nation through one’s own skill.

10)  Even if we are well-qualified with modern education but have no control on our mind, then our life will remain unhappy and always live with doubts and suspicions.

11)  All the Tibetans either in Tibet or in exile, everyone must take individual responsibility with regards to the environment. Everyone should advice, suggest and show example to others regarding the preservation of favorable environment.

12)  We have escaped into exile with the aim of regaining freedom and after arriving here, even though the earliest generation of the refugee has almost finished but we can’t forget our aim. Therefore, in order to attain this goal by pure Tibetan race, we have settled in Tibetan settlements having 2-3 thousands people living together. So it is important that we should not get dispersed from the group.

13)  Benefits of China must be considered by Tibetans and our benefits must be considered by China too and that process I call is ‘Middle-Path’. We are struggling through this middle-path and there is no practice of winning oneself by defeating others. So, therefore, when there is no practice of such self-winning and other-losing, then whatever we are doing is related to religion.

14)  There may be some learned and well-qualified scholars among the senior monks but it is very rare among the junior monks. If the people simply think that the children are well-fed and get little education in monasteries then it is wrong. It is better to admit them in schools.

15)  If we could establish a human society in Tibet based on love and compassion which can be administered with freedom, then it is cent percent sure that not only Tibet will be benefited by it but also China will be benefited a lot. Therefore, we should not struggle for our freedom with negative thoughts against China.

16)  In order to make optimum use of human intelligence, it is essential to have good education. Without education, man can’t use their mind to the fullest even if he has a pure mind. Therefore, education is very essential. We can know the level of nations’ development by seeing the level of literacy rate of the respective nations.

17)  There are around 15, 0000 (One lakh, fifty thousand) exile Tibetans scattered all over the world. We have departed from our motherland to struggle for the truth of our race. It is not appropriate if we only fulfill our own personal needs. We are here in exile on behalf of our motherland. Therefore, by seeing the continuous deterioration of our culture and religion in Tibet, that much we ought to preserve and promote them.

18)  All the parliamentarians should be sincere and responsible not only during the sessions but also during their stay in their respective places. They should bring out drawbacks and mistakes being made by government staffs and also the opinions of the local people to the parliament or the kashag or any concerned officers.

Excerpts from the speeches of the 10th Panchen Lama:

1)      In all the schools in Tibet, everyone should work hard to include Tibetan language in the education system. Every Tibetan student must know and learn Tibetan. Therefore, I personally consider the importance of teaching Tibetan as main subject in junior schools in Tibet.

2)      We ought to respect and love elder people in our society.  Even in family also, we ought to respect and love our parents and grandparents and other elderly people. We ought to serve them with sincere love and respect. And we definitely need to help the needy and sick people nearby us. We ought to offer alms to poor and destitute. If we do all these then it is the well-mannered character of a devoted Tibetan and at the same time, all these sort of our thoughts and actions befit the wish of Lord Buddha.

3)      Tibetan language has its 1300 years of history. It includes complete and perfect education like logic, history, astrology, science of medicine, literature and art, religion, etc. If the education about a human race is needed to propagate, then it is utmost important to preserve and promote the outstanding traditional culture of that human race.

4)      Along with the economic development, works of the cultural education should also be strongly promoted. It enhances the standard of Tibetans’ knowledge in cultural studies. It is an essential component to bring the Tibetan race in the line of developed races.
